The Czech Countryside

Towering cliff formations, vineyards, lakes or quiet meadows - all these sights ideal for a romantic get-away can be found in the Czech Republic in astonishing numbers. If you enjoy views from mountain ridges, or strolls in the mysterious forests beside fishponds and rivers, you're in the right place. Thanks to the small size of the Czech Republic, travellers can pass through many greatly differing types of landscape in a matter of a few hours.

The Bohemian Forest (umava)
The national park umava spreads along practically the entire length of the Czech Republic's border with Bavaria. Its unspoiled forests and hills are ideal for a romantic holiday.

Tips for the visitor
In the most famous Czech virgin forest of Boubín you can stroll past romantic lakes or head off along one of the many marked hiking or cycling trails.

The Moravian Karst (Moravský kras)
The region of the Moravian Karst with its roughly 1000 caves is one of the largest cave networks in the Czech Republic. Open to the public are four caving routes: Balcarka Cave, the Sloup-Šošůvka Cave, the Kateřina Cave and the most famous, the Punkva Cave (Punkevní jeskyně), traversed by the underground river Punkva.

Tips for the visitor
Make your way into the deepest chasm in the entire country, Macocha (138.7 m below ground), accessible by rowboat along the river Punkva.

Adrpach
One of the most captivating rock formations in Europe lies in north-east Bohemia. A literal "rock town", it boasts a variety of outcroppings and sandstone towers of up to 100 metres in height. You yourself can try to recognise the shapes of the animals and people after whom the formations are named.

Tips for the visitor
Make sure to enjoy a trip by boat around the natural waterfall.

Pálava Hills (Pálavské vrchy)
The protected landscape region known as Pálava encompasses the entire range of the Pavlov Hills along with part of the marshy forests below the Lower Novomlýnské reservoirs near the town of Mikulov. The reservation itself lies in the beautiful and fertile wine-growing region of south Moravia.

Tips for the visitor
Stop in at one of the many hillside wine cellars dotted throughout the region.

The Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj)
The Bohemian Paradise, our last tip for a romantic holiday, has since October 2005 been listed as a UNESCO Geopark. Set off into the mysterious cliffs of the Prachovské skály for a hike among high stone monoliths reaching to the heavens like bizarre natural fortifications.

The best months to visit, in terms of the weather and availability of rooms and services, are the months of May, June and September. July and August, while the country's busiest tourist months, might still be fine if you are venturing into the countryside.
